What a fantastic start to the Year 4 residential! We've been treated to perfect weather today - blue skies and sunshine. We also had a brilliant journey down, arriving at 10.15am and (after unloading the luggage) getting straight into our first activity.
We headed into the conservation area with nets and buckets in hand, ready to pond dip. The children worked in pairs to dredge the pond using the net, then sort through 'the catch', identifying creatures as they went along. We were lucky in finding a variety of small fish and other freshwater wildlife.
After washing our hands and stopping for a drink and a biscuit, we went in to the classroom to research what owls eat. This was done by dissecting owl pellets. The 'surgeons' picked through the pellet to find the bones of the creatures eaten by the owl. The 'cleaner' washed them off and the researcher used an identification key to work out what the animal was. We found a variety of mice and voles.
After a huge lunch in the dining room, the children were shown to their rooms and have enjoying unpacking and settling in. They are currently enjoying free time in the adventure playground and games room, working up an appetite for dinner at 5.15pm
This evening the children will be learning all about wildlife photography. Hopefully this will be a useful skill for tomorrow evening when we will visit the hides late in the evening to spot badgers and foxes.
All is great at Stubbington.
